'LAND AND SEE'

'Land and See' - Week 1

Uphill - Day 1
Uphill boat yard - Day 1

Our first project on the UAL Art Foundation course was titled 'Land and See'. The course began with a two-day trip down to the water front and Uphill boat yard, where we were able to take photographs and observational drawings of our surroundings.

Uphill - Day 1
We studied the relationship between land and water using a range of tones and marks. I began by simply using pencils, and then explored the use of graphite sticks, fine-line pens as well as ink and charcoal. At first I created quick 5 minute drawings, experimenting with marks and compositions, using quick gestural marks to create a visual note of the environment. I then began to spend longer on drawings and explored the way that marks can be used to convey information, allowing me to focus on creating larger, more detailed drawings.
Knightstone Island - Day 2

The dockyard contained a variety of boats, decay and structures, which provided a contrast of man-made items against the natural forms of land. I was particularly interested in the exploration of the landscape and how atmospheric and dynamic drawings could be created from the surroundings. The second day took us to Weston sea front, where I studied composition closely, looking at the relationship between land and water and the way that this could be included in drawings.
